The Colour LaserJet 4700 uses inline toner cartridges and direct to page printing to give throughput of up to 30 pages per minute. Particularly in its network multi-tray variants this printer is primarily aimed at workgroups. The printer is fast and robust enough, with sufficient cartridge capacity that it can be used as a production printer for short runs of things like catalogues.

The 4700 and 4700n cannot easily be upgraded to duplex. Otherwise the 4700 series is highly scaleable with up to 4 stacking trays.

The CLJ 4730MFP is a related multifunction print, copy fax device.

The HP CP4005 is closely related, slightly slower and with fewer expansion options intended for individuals and small teams.

The CLJ CP6015 series is a more recent and faster printer at 40ppm with wide format and multifunction capability. HP’s new “Edgeline” printers promise cost savings. New printer buyers will want to look at those options. The CLJ 4700 design is far from obsolete in service yet. It still has life in it.

Duty Cycle:

Up to 100,000 pages per month. Print cartridge life is around 10,000 pages. The CLJ4700 is similar in design to its predecessor the CLJ4650 but the duty cycle figure has been uprated implying it is a bit more robust or that experience with the older design proved it lasted well.

Print Speed:

Speed up to 30 pages per minute for letter and presumably for A4. Speed 4 ppm for transparencies. First page out in 10 seconds from ready and 16.5 seconds from powersave. Uses instant-on technology to reduce warmup time.

The CLJ 4730MFP is a related multifunction print, copy fax device.

Engine resolution 600×600. Enhanced imaging using HP ImageREt 3600.

Paper Handling:

Paper handling – standard 2 trays with 600 sheet capacity. Maximum 6 trays

Tray 1:Multipurpose fold down tray takes media from 76×127 to 216x356mm; 60 to 220 g/m2;

Tray 2:Built in cassette in the printer base. Takes media from 148×210 to 21 x356mm ; 60 to 120 g/m2

Tray 3, 4, 5 and 6:The printer can take up to 4 optional trays. These optional trays are placed under the printer and make it into a floor-standing unit. Trays take media from 148×210 to 216×356 mm; 60 to 120 g/m2

Face Down:

Default output is to a 500 sheet face-down output bin recessed in the printer top. Optional output to a 750 sheet stapler-stacker.

Duplex:

Duplex for media sizes A4 to B5 and weights to 120gsm is built in on “D” models. There is no upgrade to convert other models to duplex.
